with Meaghan Curley:
Q1: When did you start writing and first influences?
Meaghan: I started writing at 7 because therapy wasn’t an option back then. First influences were Lemony Snicket, Tamora Pierce and the woman who must not be named.
Q2: Who are your biggest influences today?
Meaghan: I’m influenced by everyone I’ve been around, every line I’ve ever read, every media I’ve ever consumed.
Q3: Any pivotal moment when you knew you wanted to be a writer?
Meaghan: I never had a “I want to be a writer“ moment it was more of this is the only coping skill I have and if I don’t write I’m going to explode.
Q4: Who has helped you most with writing?
Meaghan: Myself and Peter Mark Roget inventor of the thesaurus.
Q5: Where did you grow up and how did that influence your writing & have any travels away from home influence your writing?
Meaghan: I grew up in Utica NY, an impoverished city in upstate NY (on its way to being gentrified) nicknamed the city that loves refugees. That city, with its many flaws and glories, is my past present and future. I’m not widely travelled yet but none of the places I’ll visit will ever have as big of an influence on me as that small, overshadowed, vibrant city.
Q6: What do you consider your most meaningful work you’ve done creatively so far to you?
Meaghan: My poem “an ode to Panhandlers”.
Q7: Favorite activities to relax?
Meaghan: Rewatching the Simpsons, hanging out with my loved ones, journaling and [redacted].
Q8: What is a favorite line/stanza from a poem/writing of yours or others?
“Because I’ve learned Pity is a lot like Currency:
It’s only as good as what you get out of it”
