2 Poems by Samantha Terrell : Carpe Diem & Standards

Carpe Diem

I curse you, Shame - a
Persistent thief who
Sneaks into mornings, which turn into
Days - with your
Memories and fears
Determined to
Steal esteem
To fuel
New days, which
Turn into years.

Standards

My crown of bricks
Weighs upon my head -
Where it sits
Mocking me with its
Symbolism, and dissent
From expectation.

I understand it looks odd.
Please trust
It often
Feels awful.
But, for me, it’s more of a must
Than a choice.

So go ahead, stare.
I’ve learned constant
Application of pressure
Ensures
Consistent
Results.

2 Poems by Samantha Terrell : “Unfurled Living” “Off and Away”

Unfurled Living

What if I was getting
Used to
Cloistered living,
Less chaos,
Slower paces?

What if global despair
Caused time for
Personal repair,
Fulfillment,
Contentment?

What can I hold
In my quiet heart,
Now that I have to be bold
Again; go out into the world
Again, amongst the unfurled?

Off and Away

Smoke billowing from
The toaster-oven
Indicates I’ve
Lost track of
My spirit, again.

It runs off, sometimes,
To fear for the global economy,
Or try and
Make sense
Of me.

“Ding!” the toaster
Rang, but my spirit
Didn’t hear it. It
Was busy recalling
Song lyrics.

Now, music notes and burnt-toast-smoke
Rise with me.

2 poems from Samantha Terrell : ‘Regaining Wonderment’ (from an Anthology) & ‘Fighting with Straw Men’

Beach, Water, California, Redwoods, Sand
Regaining Wonderment

I saw a picture - Or,
Was it a dream? -
Of a full-grown Redwood washed up on a beach.
The giant had become

The driftwood of giants,
Tossed about effortlessly
By the ocean, since oceans aren't
Easily intimidated.

Our son repeatedly tells us
He wants to visit the Redwood Forest.
It's ironic how being small amidst large can feel empowering,
Somehow.

Knowing your limits,
Means knowing your place -
The means to rediscover
A sense of wonder.

Perhaps, the tree
Only wanted to feel young again.
But where will
The ocean go, to feel small?

Fighting with Straw Men

Try arguing with
The straw man who's
Making his true case that
Some times are easier than
Others, to pretend
We're not all waiting around to die.

He's right, of course.
Wilting demands we watch
Its predictable end - but
We'd prefer not to look.
Even anonymous funerals are
Harder to attend than weddings.

Now, I'm the straw man -
Making his case for him,
When we were meant to be
Arguing about the
Prettiest floral arrangement
For the venue.

A Blossom For Your Song: Poetry by Samantha Terrell

Samantha Terrell

A Blossom For Your Song

We discovered
Bossa Nova when
The forsythia and
Weeping cherry were
In bloom,
Outside the living room

Where you
Swirled me
Round – a blur of cream and blue
Upholstery –
Dips
And Spins

Made easy
On the hardwood floor.
You’ve always been a better dancer than me.
I’m a petal in your
Palm,
A blossom for your song.

2 new poems by Samantha Terrell

Earning Grace

Mulch-covered footpaths
Laid out through
Black-green woods,
Beckon,
Demanding a penance:

Time.
Feet pad heavily –
Left, right, left, right –
Pushing forward through space,
Setting a pace

Unmatched by the mind. The path – a tether, now – is
Pulling
Out-of-sync.
Anxiety wants a breeze,
But it won’t take it. Still, music is in the trees,

Waiting for you to earn your hallelujah.

Hide and Seek

Referred Pain Occurs at a site
Other than an injury

You dreamt I was
A tattoo artist,
Inflicting my painful craft on you.

I asked what type of tattoo it was.
You could only remember the pain.
But how will we find its source?

I dreamt I was following you
Through a crowd.
You kept hiding from me

No wonder –
I would hide from
My pain, too.
