“Deafness” by Jon Bennett

My boyfriend has depression
and hearing loss
so he gets on bupropion
and sticks in hearing aids
“When I dream of you,” I tell him,
“you’re a different person
than you are on those pills.”
He just stares at me
“Didn’t you hear me?” I say
and I want to smack him
the way
he used to smack me
“The pills make me feel normal,”
he says finally,
“you should be happy for me.”
Now he feels
like the person
he is in his dreams
but in my dreams
he has left me
far behind.
