Poems by David Hanlon in Fevers of the Mind Press Presents the Poets of 2020

Binge

Scrambling,
in the plughole swill of stupor
to fill
this emptiness
until I'm bloated
with desolation.
My stomach made siren,
a protrusion: incessant reminder,
a planet of pain.

Scrambling,
in the bleary haze
of morning sewers,
to engulf
the precision of ritual,
to tone
this self-sabotage,
sculpt it
into reform, again
and again

Autumn's swathe

I stride
beneath a trellis of Braeburn apple-leaves,
autumn unfolding its vermilion arms
at my feet,
shooting gold-fire sparks
from its fingertips,
the wind
coiling me in its chill.

In this familiar entropy
I shiver, still
thinking of you
