Poems from Fevers of the Mind Anthologies by Samantha Merz

Volcano, Hawaii, Lava, Cloud, Ash, Water
Volcanoes Erupt

It's hard to debate with a mate
Good intentions backfire

Wooden bedside table replaced by a filing cabinet

Thinking about the possibility of a solar vortex,
gobsmacked by the galaxy

His former flame enjoys watching commercials
She moves at a slower pace than him
Only after simple pleasures and routine
Cooking tuna casseroles after peeling carrots
Loves planting roses, dahlias and enjoys knitting
Left alone to shop; socialize
Her subconscious gets the best of her

Volcanoes Erupt

Staying Strong

Have no fear, I am staying strong inside
Felt quite empty and incomplete without you,
but you were in town
Couldn't bring a plus-one to the special event

We watched in May
Five weeks away from the big day
It could be pulled away
From me

It's eve and the digital clock reads

Presents would have to be returned
Enjoying the warmer than usual mid-spring summer

Pastel tones against pale skin

I have to shut the blinds to hide the light from the moon and stars
I believe the coexistence of memories and gratitude
Let's sit in silence while the wick of the soy candle burns

In the distance

Ode to Light
Nothing but tropical dreams
You're a champion
Persistent to thrive despite the pestilence
Dealing with kenopsia
Still boisterous
Avoiding the void
Turn things red
Revealing relevance
Enjoying a starlit swim
Even in solitude
All about admiration
An Arrowstone jewel
Out for a drive
Windswept sand and seagulls

Sea Thrift

End of quarantine with my head high and hair up
We'll share saltines
Heavenly hydrangeas
Producing alien pop
Dreams of wearing a pastel hued tie-dyed rainbow -
Attico dress in the attic
Painting with water colours, an aquatic scene
Canna lily in the shadow
Cinematic or repetitive
People will hate it but it's so weird,
new and unlike anything else
Come give it a shot
Any incentive with payment?
Maybe I ended up in the wrong sector
Bad bus seats
Giggle girl groupie
Friends with St. Jude and St. Anthony
Lost causes and objects
Cinnamon cherry
Cruel beauty
More valuable than a wheelbarrow
Miss Miroloma
Shower me with delight
Viral vixen

Madame madrona in mookaite
Kitschy glamorous vibes
Getting out the dust from the cloths
Near the sea thrift
