Love Poem #2 by Sarah Marquez in Avalanches in Poetry Writings & Art Inspired by Leonard Cohen
Love Poem #2inspired by Leonard Cohen's "Innermost Door"
I have walked into your world
& now there is no way out.
I have fallen for the oldest trick -
Your aura swelling with the warmth
of today's kiss, tomorrow's cold sorrow.
The mourning dove mates for life.
A blush-brown couple sit
on the thick telephone wire
crossing over the house.
The bottom world
is their feeding ground,
the sky an overturned bowl
enclosing the sun, the clouds.
I have walked into your world
& now there is no way out.
I have sung about this before -
My head framed in a halo of fireworks
exploding, death banging at the door
of my mind, packed tight with memories
I hoard, in case the shadows of our hands
disappear, in case the walls cave in.
People are more skin than bone.
More water than wood.
Look, how easily I absorb
what I'm given.
I have walked into your world
& now there is no way out.
I can't walk fast
but I've made it here.
Now, I prepare for the end.
When we get wherever we're going,
I'll sink in & flow backward.
