Poetry by Arthur L. Wood : the Hudson Gates & Hummingbird

The Hudson Gate

They daze you power, they bury you with glory,
Make you so mad you forget your own story.
You feel so special, lose sight of your fate,
They’re sailing all the ships to the Hudson Gate.

There’s a weight in the air we’re feeling like death,
There’s a will to pervert, a poison in the breath,
A tune in the head going fol de rol de rol,
And a love for the dead who inhabit my soul.

The clock on the wall is posing as the time,
The friend in the hall is schmoozing with a crime,
Signs in the street dismantling the state,
They’re driving all the ships to the Hudson Gate.

The lady in the crowd is unfolding her soft arms,
Violence is close behind the raising of the palms.
The violin sonatas are shining on the moon,
And everything is vile on a mobile phone.

The mighty drum of change is weakening its skin,
Two thousand years of horror suddenly begin.
Through the stretching animal a stick goes straight,
They’re steering all the ships to the Hudson Gate.

The man with the hand is told not to shoot,
Little Thomas Tallis is playing on his lute,
The gaggle of geese are flying to the sun,
Und Die Spinne’s stuck in the web that she spun.

They bury you with glory, they daze you with power,
They grind infinity out of every hour,
They teach the techniques of love and hate.
They’re taking all the ships to the Hudson Gate.

Hummingbird

Listen to the hummingbird weaving with the sky
And drop your gentle agony into the pools of time.
See her sink, though she is here, with battered wings we fly,
In cocktails and music, in Cohen’s ancient rhyme.

When Skellig dances with my love I feel a shot of bliss.
My veins swell with heroin, but I have only seen
A poppy in a field, and I have never been
Close to Buddhahood – I’ve only touched her kiss.

Only! What a word! For there’s magic in her breath
And happiness to seize, there are stairways to ascend!
There’s holiness to lie between, another gorgeous death,
Another life to live, another way to wend!
